PTE Academic Exam
The PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is an English language test designed to assess the readiness of non-native English speakers to participate in a university-level academic program. It measures listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills through a computer-based test, and is accepted by universities and colleges in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, among other countries. The test takes approximately 2 hours to complete and test takers receive their results within 5 business days.
Part 1: Speaking Section in PTE Academic
The speaking section of the PTE Academic exam consists of several tasks that assess the test taker's ability to speak English fluently and accurately. The tasks include:
1- Personal introduction: The test taker is asked to introduce themselves and provide some information about their background.
2-Read aloud: The test taker is given a text to read aloud, and their pronunciation, intonation, and stress are evaluated.
3- Repeat sentence: The test taker is played an audio clip of a sentence, and they are required to repeat it as accurately as possible.
4-Describe image: The test taker is presented with an image and is required to describe it in detail.
5- Re-tell lecture: The test taker is played an audio clip of a lecture, and they are required to summarize the main points in their own words.
6- Answer short question: The test taker is asked a question and is required to give a brief answer.
7- Summarize written text: The test taker is given a short written text to read, and they are required to summarize the main points in one sentence.
8- Essay: The test taker is given a topic and is required to write a 200-300 word essay in 20 minutes.
The speaking section is usually the last section of the PTE Academic test and it is done in one sitting.
Part 2: Reading Section in PTE Academic Test
The reading section of the PTE Academic test measures the test taker's ability to understand and analyze written texts in English. The tasks in this section include:
1- Multiple-choice, single answer: The test taker is presented with a short passage and several questions, each with four options. They must select the correct answer.
2- Multiple-choice, multiple answers: The test taker is presented with a short passage and several questions, each with four options. They must select all the correct answers.
3- Re-order paragraphs: The test taker is presented with a passage that has been divided into several paragraphs. They must reorder the paragraphs to form a coherent text.
4- Fill in the blanks: The test taker is presented with a short passage with some words missing. They must fill in the blanks with the appropriate words.
5- Reading & writing: Fill in the blanks: The test taker is presented with a short passage with some words missing. They must type the missing words in the blank space provided.
The reading section usually takes around an 30 minutes to complete and test takers are given a time limit for each task. The texts used in the reading section are academic in nature and are taken from various sources such as journals, newspapers, and magazines.
Part 3: Listening Section PTE Academic Test
The listening section of the PTE Academic test measures the test taker's ability to understand spoken English. The tasks in this section include:
1- Summarize spoken text: The test taker is played an audio clip of a short spoken text, and they are required to summarize the main points in one sentence.
2- Multiple-choice, single answer: The test taker is played an audio clip, and they are presented with several questions, each with four options. They must select the correct answer.
3- Multiple-choice, multiple answers: The test taker is played an audio clip, and they are presented with several questions, each with four options. They must select all the correct answers.
4- Fill in the blanks: The test taker is played an audio clip of a short spoken text with some words missing. They must fill in the blanks with the appropriate words.
5- Highlight correct summary: The test taker is played an audio clip and presented with a text that contains several summary options, They are required to select the option that correctly summarizes the audio.
6- Select missing word: The test taker is played an audio clip of a sentence with one missing word, They are required to select the missing word from a set of options.
7- highlight Incorrect Words : Select changed words/ Wrong Words from the Text.
8- Write from dictation: The test taker is played an audio clip and required to type what they hear.
The listening section usually takes around 45 minutes to complete and test takers are given a time limit for each task. The audio clips used in the listening section are academic in nature and are taken from various sources such as lectures, speeches, and presentations.
PTE Academic test has become shorter 🙂
This is the major change that you need to keep in mind, and it’s not a bad one at all for you. In brief, the test length is reduced from around 3 hours to around 2 hours. 2022 PTE Academic Test Changes
The personal introduction have not change. The speaking and writing section have been reduced to 54-67 minutes. The reading section reduced to 29-30 minutes. The optional break is removed and the listening section will reduce to 30-43 minutes.
So, all up, there is a one-hour decrease in the time provided to complete PTE Academic. And considering the question types aren’t changing and it didn’t not get harder, this is a win for test-takers. The test will still measure your language skills just as reliably, validly and fairly as before.
